The Matchup of Opposites: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(1990) vs. Bloodsport

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(1990) Vs. Bloodsport

It’s possible that no two movies in the first round matchups of the Martial Arts Movie March Madness are as different from each other as these two are. They are a true matchup of opposites. On one hand, you have the light and witty Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), and on the other, you have the dramatic, edge-of-your-seat Bloodsport. One is about four mutant turtles trained in the art of ninjutsu, fighting a secret ninja crime syndicate in New York. The other is based on the phony “true story” of Frank Dux fighting in the super secret underground kumite while being pursued by government officials. It’s easy to see that no matter what you are looking for in a martial arts flick, this matchup has it covered.

The Matchup

Despite being a matchup of opposites, both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Bloodsport are heavyweights in the martial arts movie world. Ask any martial artist if they have heard of either of the two, and you’re likely to hear a resounding “yes”. They have stood the test of time and will forever be considered “classics” in the martial arts movie universe. Unfortunately, only one of them can advance to the next round of the Martial Arts Movies March Madness. So what about these two movies makes one of them worthy enough to be voted into the next round?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

There are three things that make Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles worthy of moving on. The first one is that it is light and witty. It has a straightforward plot line that is easy to follow, filled with quotable jokes, one-liners, and lighthearted humor throughout the film.

The second is that you can watch it with the young martial artists in the family. Many of us who love this movie watched it for the first time when we were kids and, minus a couple of minor curse words, the movie is safe for the whole family to watch and laugh at together.

The third is simple nostalgia. For many martial artists, this movie was their introduction and is what inspired them to start practicing martial arts. It brings back fond memories of their childhoods and the beginnings of the martial arts journeys.

Bloodsport

On the other end of the spectrum, Bloodsport is not as safe for the kids, nor is it lighthearted. It is more of what usually comes to mind when you think of a typical martial arts film. Its strength lies in the number and variety of different martial arts represented in the film. Additionally, it’s a very inspiring, albeit untrue, story of a man who seemed to defy the odds and do the impossible. Of the two movies, Bloodsport has the better sequences of martial arts choreography, but probably doesn’t tug on emotional heartstrings of the individual martial artist.
