Positive ones are harder to find. Plantation, Florida, USA

Youth empowerment workshop against bullying in local schools, presented by the John Wai Kung Fu Academy in Plantation, Florida. Assistant Lian Chung expanded what they’re doing within their school already to the local community with the new school year approaching.

Tianjin, China

Huo Jinghong and her qigong team recently won gold at China’s National Games. Her great-great grandfather was the famed Huo Yuanjia and was the featured character in the 2006 Jet Li film Fearless.

“The Kung Fu Nuns are heroes of the Himalayas.” These amazing women are using martial arts to teach local women self-defense, challenge traditional gender roles, and combat the rising incidents of sexual assault and abuse.  The nuns belong to the Drukpa lineage, the only female branch in the typically male dominated Buddhist monastic system.

This young man will be competing with the U.S. Junior National Team in the Pan American Championships in Costa Rica. He is only 15 years old and just won in his division at the United States National Taekwondo Championships in Detroit, Michigan to move on to international competition.

A real estate agent and world champion! While being a successful real estate agent, Mr. Stephen Ruber is also a very dedicated student of Taekwondo. Mr. Ruber recently won the ATA World Championships in Little Rock, Arkansas in June which was the culmination of his 10-month plan.

Helena Fox and her dedicated Tai Chi students have been working diligently to raise money for the “Raise the roof” campaign. The funds raised will go towards installing a new roof on the Corralitos Cultural Center where they practice and hone their art.

Personal self-defense instructor Tony Welch teaches the physical and mental sides of self-defense.  He travels to where people work, live, and play to teach the concepts of self-defense. Mr. Welch decided that people can learn better in the environments they are familiar with.  He uses a personal training approach and tailors the instruction to the individual in their setting.

Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA

Non-profit UND Hisshou Karate group focuses on teaching the physical and mental benefits of Shotokan Karate through instruction and mentorship. Karen Katrink, a senior advisor of the group, states that the classes employ a “come as you are approach.” Their classes focus on blocks, kicks, and punches, in addition to teaching dedication and hard work.
