Let the Positivity Flow Through You….
This semi-regular post will attempt to highlight positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments. Detroit, Michigan, USA
6th grader Emilie Agamie experienced success recently. At the USA Taekwondo National Championship in Detroit, she earned gold in board breaking. She also earned silver in forms in her division. However, this was not her first time competing. This was her third time participating in this competition. She has great support, too, as nearly her entire family trains in Taekwondo as well! Great job Emilie and keep training!
Batavia, New York, USA
Masters and co-owners Russ Corey and Eric LeVann recently opened their new location for Bushido Martial Arts. According to them, they simply outgrew their old location. This one is almost 16,000 square feet! The new location was prepared for the grand opening with help from only the owners and volunteers. Best of luck and keep educating!

Columbia, South Carolina, USA
For most of Joseph Whiting’s life, he used to be concerned about combat in the military. Now he is educating on inner peace by teaching Tai Chi to seniors. He teaches for improved health and fall safety. Most notably, he has the credentials to back it all up. He has earned multiple gold medals in competitions with his Tai Chi forms. In addition, he is the current National Champion of the United States Ko Shu Federation in his age division! Congratulations Mr. Whiting and keep teaching and training!
Hyannis, Massachusets, USA
Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod is helping patients with Parkinson’s disease with boxing. The program they offer is called “Rock Steady Boxing.” It is designed to help the patients increase their balance, safety, strength, and endurance. In addition, this program is offered in conjunction with Alpha Krav Maga at their studio. Many of the patient’s report enjoy the high-intensity exercise and report positive results!
Starkville, Mississippi, USA
The Starkville Police Department recently hosted a self-defense class for women. Downtown Martial Arts Academy hosted the seminar. Approximately 30 women showed up to learn the self-defense skills offered. Especially relevant, the police department got the idea to host a self-defense seminar catering to women from a local Realtor. While they taught some basic self-defense concepts, the officers encouraged the attendees to seek out more advanced training. Here’s to hoping they do!
Livingston, Louisiana, USA
Being the “quiet kid” was very common for Jacob Boutwell. Consequently, getting picked on and being bullied was also common. Then he discovered the recently opened Livingston Karate studio. While he learned self-defense, he also learned about respect. Most notably he discovered his inner confidence. He has had quite a bit of success in competitions in the region. Keep up the great work Jacob!
