Positivity Is A State Of Mind!

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

A person having a stroke is a very serious health condition. While there are different severities when it comes to strokes, all involve damage to brain tissue. Sometimes this is permanent, other times it is temporary. Very commonly this involves partial or full paralysis to one side of the body. When one of our loved ones suffer from a stroke, time is of the essence for EMT’s to be able to administer medication that may be able to significantly reduce the severity of the stroke. Typically we think of older people when we think of strokes. Neveah Beevor’s parents also had a hard time believing their daughter could have one at six months old. Now, at seven years old, she is finally starting to regain use of her right hand and her parents credit her Taekwondo training and instructor!

Stating that there are a lot of philosophical lessons embedded in the various martial arts styles would not be shocking to most. Many, if not most, styles educate on avoiding fights, concepts of movement in sparring, and violence de-escalation. But as soon as we pack up and walk out we leave those lessons on the mat, right? Quite the opposite. Paypal CEO Dan Schulman, a Krav Maga practitioner for decades, has applied the various philosophies he has learned on the mat to the boardroom.

When it comes to chronic conditions of the human body, some are environmental and others are genetic. Type 1 Diabetes is one of those genetic conditions. Unlike Type 2, Type 1 diabetes is genetic and can be diagnosed at any time, even in youth. While it can be managed, the diet allowances are restricted which makes maintaining a healthy weight difficult. However, that does not preclude living a long and fulfilling life. Just ask Kris Colvin, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes a year ago at 70 years old. She has not only become an avid Tai Chi practitioner to combat diabetes, she also recently discovered boxing!

Ok, let’s get real for a second. Are you one of those practitioners that have been calling for better quality martial arts direction on TV and film? Are you wanting to actually be able to tell what the characters on screen are doing? Then I’m giving you a call to action. For us to get through to Hollywood about this, we need to support great martial arts on-screen when it happens. New John Wick? We better pack the theaters. A new season of Into The Badlands? We should be watching/streaming the heck out of it. Well, here is another show you better keep on your radar: Wu Assassins. Being developed with Iko Uwais (The Raid, Raid 2) for Netflix, it will also feature JuJu Chan and Mark Dacascos. For us as martial artists who want better quality in our movies and TV, now is the time to tell the studios with our eyes and wallets. Right now, there is just enough good stuff out there that if these movies and shows are successful, we will likely continue to get more.
