Four Downs of Positivity!

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

Self-defense videos aimed at women are a dime a dozen online. We have probably all seen at least a handful of them. While there are plainly terrible ones out there, most tend to be at least educational, if not decent. Many show good techniques and common-sense advice. However, many make a common critical error: They don’t tell you that you likely don’t have a chance to pull off these defense techniques without significant training. My fellow author here on Martial Journal, Mr. Louis Martin, went into depth on the self-defense seminar version of this topic here. She is currently working on getting to represent the Philippines on the national team.

Storm Lake Kenpo Karate has teamed up with the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony to provide martial arts education, but also strengthening those family bonds.

When it comes to the human body, specific conditioning, and training matters. When you train for a specific sport or activity, the body continues to become better and better at doing that thing. In the Physical Therapy world, this is called the Specificity Principle. Basically speaking, if you want to be a better swimmer, then spend less time running and get in the pool. While both are cardiovascular activities, the benefits of one don’t transfer to the other. Apparently, the Specificity Principle applies to competing in tournaments because Mr. C. Bruce Heilmann is still going strong. At 68 years of age, not only is he still getting in the ring, he is still winning as well!
