Plant The Seeds Of Positivity And Enjoy The Harvest!
This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

I have talked about having a martial arts family and just how beneficial that can be to your training. However, there are some out there who’s martial arts family is also their actual family. There are many benefits to this. When one member is in a funk, the rest of the family may be able to help them through it and continue to train. There is also the benefit of creating tighter bonds with the family members. I can attest to this personally. So can Don Quinn. He has trained with his two sons for many years.

Any martial artist knows that kids training brings not only physical improvement, but mental benefits as well. The training builds traits like confidence, perseverance, and determination, just to name a few. I don’t think it can be overstated how important it is to build these traits in the formative years of a child. This can have positive life-long lasting effects as they grow. But could martial arts training as a child help reduce the potential for mental health problems later in life?

I am a big believer and supporter of a woman having the ability to defend herself. In most western countries, if a woman wants to learn self-defense, they just need to find a school and sign up. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In countries like India, rape and sexual assault against women is prevalent, to say the least. Additionally, women learning self-defense is not a widely accepted practice. Thankfully, Meenakshi Raghavan is working hard to change that as she teaches her martial art, Kalaripayattu, to young women.

While we would all like to believe that our martial arts journey will be a linear path, the truth is that it is a winding one with many detours. Many things can cause these detours, but health problems can be one of the most jarring. Various health problems can drastically alter, or halt, your martial arts training. So, I love seeing stories of martial artists who found a way to persevere through their health problems and continue on. Matthew Poulin’s story is not just one of perseverance through difficulties with his health problems, but also as the owner of his own school. Keep fighting the good fight sir!
