Build Your House On A Foundation Of Positivity
This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

Regardless of the style of martial art you train in, you are working towards personal improvement and success. Anybody who has earned a black belt rank, in any style, has had to overcome something along the way. Maybe it was having difficulty with a kata/form or having to get your kicks higher. For some, though, they have had to overcome the challenges that come with being autistic. Colin Rose didn’t just overcome them, he blew through them just like the boards he broke along the way.

Drug addiction is a significant problem all over the world. In the area I live in near Cincinnati, Ohio, opioid abuse and addiction is a very large problem. Many people know someone whose own life or family has been affected by drug addiction. Of course, there have been various laws passed to combat drug addiction problems, with limited effect. That is why this article detailing the approach the city government in Shanghai is interesting. They have introduced martial arts into the rehabilitation program there. It is very interesting and worth a read.

The family you are born into will likely have the single greatest effect on who you become as an adult. You will have spent most of the time of your life into your twenties around those family members. From family business to sports families, you can see how the family dynamic can have an effect on the children. The same is also true in the martial arts. I train with my children, in addition to two other families, at my Taekwondo school. This family dynamic helps provide stability through the difficult times. This is no different for the Bruce family who is still training after 4 years.

Many martial arts schools use board breaking for various reasons. For some, it is a way to harden the striking surfaces of various points of the body. For others, it is a way to verify the correct force application of a particular strike. Of course, board breaking can also be a bit of a performance art with amazing kick combinations. And yet, for some martial arts schools, board breaking can be used to build the character of their students and raise money for cancer research. This is exactly what Bill Cho’s United Taekwondo Center did recently. Great job!
