Breathe In The Positivity

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

Have you ever struggled to find seminars in your local or regional area? That is because there was no place to post events so that everybody could see them…………..until now! The ability to defend oneself is a very valuable skill. While you can learn a few valuable things at a three-hour seminar, to be truly proficient requires much more. It takes years of continuous training before you become competent, let alone proficient. There is no shortcut. Author Louis Martin elaborated on this in this article here on Martial Journal. Sihing Robin Charles might agree as he is teaching Wing Chun at a local community school and is encouraging participants to become regulars.

The ability to teach others is a very valuable skill. Like any skill, it is one that needs to be constantly maintained and improved. While some know that having a black belt and being a teacher are two very different things, sometimes they get mistaken for being the same. Here we have an article about an instructor that had previously left, and then came back to help keep the studio open.

Hong Kong, China

Martial Arts movies have had such a strong cultural impact on us as martial artists. For more on this, you can read about good and bad representations of the martial arts in movies here and here. Bar none, Bruce Lee has been one of the most influential martial artists on film in history. To this day, people are still inspired by his very limited filmography. This would include Yvette Kong Man-yi who credits him as an inspiration for her in both Wing-Chun and Olympic swimming.

Bournemouth, England

When you train in the martial arts, you often train with other fellow students. The bonds that you form with your training partners can be just as deep as the lessons you learn in class. It can become a kind of family. Recently a Wing Chun club held an event for their 25th anniversary. What they didn’t expect was so many of the original members to show up and jump on the training floor.
