I Don’t Hear Yanni Or Laurel…Just Positivity!
This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

Many practitioners came to the martial arts for the competition. While I prefer the self-defense side of things myself, I cannot say I don’t thoroughly enjoy sparring nights. Competitors want to be the best that they can. Sometimes this means the best in their school, their region, or even their state. What about the world though? For Aaliyah Powell, winning at the Junior World Taekwondo Championships is just another stepping stone to the Youth Olympic Games!

There are so many qualities and techniques from the martial arts that can translate other professions. Meditation and serenity can help you get through your daily commute. De-escalation tactics can help you with an obnoxious co-worker or boss. Additionally, fine motor techniques and structure can help you sack the quarterback. Master Joe Kim recently reunited with Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots to help them with their pass rush. This is his second stint with Coach Belichick from his time with the Cleveland Browns.

Many of us, as we age, will experience the health problems that come with an aging body. Arthritic joints, heart problems, and vision or memory loss just to name a few. While this is a sobering concept to consider, there is plenty of scientific evidence that we can delay or avoid the onset of these conditions. We may even be able to improve them after they have already started. For Joanne Barton, her discovery of Tai Chi has helped her overcome the various health problems she was dealing with and regain a higher quality of life. Keep up the hard work Ms. Barton!

There are a lot of martial artists that have achieved success in the acting world. The best ones never forget to stay grounded through all of the up’s and down’s of the movie industry. Shihan Chris Casamassa is a good example here as he is touring studios and teaching young students about bullying and being fit. He is best known for the role of Scorpion in the Mortal Kombat movies. He has also appeared on whistlekick Martial Arts Radio.
