At times in my training, I have had to perform with a blindfold on. This creates a challenge by taking away your visual reference that we use to turn and accurately face various directions throughout a form or kata. There are other times when a blindfold can be beneficial when training. But what if you could never take off your blindfold? How different would your training be then? Here we have a story about those with vision impairment thriving as students in the martial arts!

Living a martial arts life is rarely represented by a straight line. Talk to many older practitioners that have high ranks in a specific style, and you may be surprised to find that they started in something else. Have you ever trained with an older practitioner that you were close in rank to, but miles away from in skill? This might be due to the fact that they have more skill than their rank in one particular style would imply. I have the pleasure of working with someone just like this on a weekly basis and he makes me better every time. Here we have the story of Sensei Jim Birkle, who has traveled on his own winding road of a martial arts life.

Martial arts styles are constantly evolving, whether we like it or not. Some styles have simply died off due to evolutions of systems or lack of students to eventually pass it on to the next generation. Even yet, some styles have been brought to the edge of extinction due to civil war and regime changes. Bokator is one such style. It was almost wiped out by the Khmer Rouge. It is also the style that birthed what we now know as Muay Thai. Read on to see what Grandmaster San Kim Sean is doing to bring Bokator back from the brink!
