Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

I have said before that I believe that the “journey” of your life is all that matters. We all have the ability to leave a mark on the world that we will eventually pass on from. What legacy do you want to leave behind? As many of you may know by now, Great Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee recently passed away at the age of 86. His legacy will always be as the “Father of Taekwondo in America.” He is responsible for so many lives that have been changed for the better by their time in Taekwondo. Thank you, sir, for the legacy you have left behind for so many to enjoy.

A family is so important to the growth of us as individuals. A family should provide safety and a sense of belonging that helps us as we grow and mature. Of course, as martial artists, we all know that some of your favorite family members are at the dojo. In short, your “family” can be whoever and wherever you make it. Recently, two Pencak Silat practitioners, who are orphans, recently won medals in the East Jakarta Mayoral Pencak Silat Cup. Congratulations to you both!

Overcoming obstacles and difficulties are a hallmark of a martial arts journey. We have all had that time, place, or person that we had to struggle to overcome at one point or another. Perseverance and a lot of stubbornness is the recipe for success in these times. Young Joel Westbrook understands this well as he overcomes all of the obstacles and difficulties we do. He just does it from a wheelchair. Along the way, he has won eight consecutive gold medals. Keep up the hard work sir!
