This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

There are many benefits to training in the martial arts. Improved physical fitness and physical ability are obvious external benefits. There are, however, internal benefits to be had. Discipline is a notable benefit that comes with training. These are all wonderful, but we should never discount a lesser known benefit: acceptance. We are not all the same, and that can lead to a feeling of ostracization. Many of us gravitated to the martial arts to learn how to defend ourselves. The desire to be able to defend oneself can be linked to a sense of personal responsibility. While it would be nice to hope that you will never be alone in a violent confrontation, that is very often the case. While no amount of martial arts experience can guarantee a positive outcome in a violent encounter, it can definitely increase your chances. Many current martial arts styles have a history that can be traced back to a home country. There are styles and systems hailing from Brazil, Israel, The Phillippines, just to name a few. China, of course, has many styles that hail from there. So many that one could be forgiven for mixing them up. But, what about Taiwan?
