Positivity-Happy Face

You Can’t April Fool With My Positivity!

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

It is no secret that many martial arts schools have programs for children. Some see this as a money grab, and maybe there is some truth in that from time to time. I prefer to look at it in a different manner. If children are the future, as is often stated, then we stand a better chance at growing the martial arts by exposing them to it at a young age. Here we have a story about two young brothers who wanted to train in karate at their school. Read on to see how it has opened the horizons to their futures!

Many martial artists that have been around the block a time or two know a little secret. There is no true “destination” if you are a lifer in the martial arts. There is only the journey, and the legacy you leave to those still here. My sole wish near the end of my time here, if I am able, is to be able to look back and say, “Not too shabby.” GM George Annarino has left a legacy, and a mark, that will be felt by all of those close to him for a long time to come. May you rest in peace, sir!

As a martial artist, watching action movies can be a lot of fun, and sometimes very irritating. Of course, the main actor is being bandied about as a lethal tour-de-force. The problem is when the editing and camerawork suggests that they have almost no actual martial arts experience. It is so wonderful to see when actors are martial artists, or at least put in real training time to improve the quality of the action. I did not know this, but Chadwick Boseman has been training in the martial arts for a long time and it explains why the choreography in Black Panther looked so good! Read on to find out how they crafted the “style” of Black Panther.

Every martial artist starts out at the same point: the beginning. However, as we progress, we start to discover our “paths” if you will. Some desire competition, others self-defense. Some want to teach, others have no desire. There are those that felt strongly about opening their own school so they could pass on what they have learned to others. Here we have an article about a BJJ school owner who doesn’t just teach but focuses on teaching those with disabilities.

There are a few things that are largely unavoidable when you train in the martial arts for any significant amount of time. Things like successes and failures, and peaks and valleys will happen. What about significant health problems? If you train long enough, you are likely to have to deal with it eventually. However, all those years of hard work, overcoming hardships, and grinding may just help you to get back on your feet faster. In this article, Chris Whittam details how the martial arts helped him get past a serious health condition.
