Discipline and respect are hallmarks of what the martial arts has provided many of us. Sure, a lot of people come to the martial arts to learn how to block, punch, and kick. However, some of the biggest benefits end up coming from things like discipline and respect. Here we have an article about the local police department using martial arts to help at-risk youths and those in diversion programs find a better path.

Military veterans experience many things in service that civilians could not understand. One of the many things that service personnel get to experience is the camaraderie that develops during the time served. As they return home to normal life, this and many other things are lost. Mr. Rob Rand experienced this for himself when he returned home and is now using martial arts to help give the camaraderie back to his fellow brothers and sisters and help with the transition out of active service.

Here we have a study about the benefits of martial arts and the positive effects it can have on attention spans.

I have been to college two separate times at two separate locations in my life. I would never say that college was the worst time of my life as it gave me a path to the career I have now. Alternatively, I can say that it was not the best time of my life as I had to take a bunch of classes that I was not enthused about. Don’t even get me started on having to re-take some science classes because the original ones I took were too old. I can say that my college experience would have been markedly better if Tai Chi and Kung Fu were course options! Here we have a university that is offering just that kind of educational option to their students.

The martial arts can have a positive effect on the lives of its practitioners for many reasons. Almost all of us could name off at least a couple things that the martial arts has done for us without much thought. Many of us might even say that the martial arts changed our lives. Here we have an article about Mr. Gavin Conroy who credits Taekwondo for substantially changing the course of his life in an amazing way.
Let’s start a discussion! Did any of these articles have an effect on you? Did they change the way you viewed a particular topic? Don’t be shy! Feel free to sound off!
