Sifting Through The Remains From The Fallout Of The Elite Eight
We had some really interesting matchups created from the winners of the Sweet Sixteen round of Martial Journal’s Martial Arts Movie March Madness. Now it’s time to cover the fallout of the matchups from the Elite Eight round. We had some original versus sequel and some old versus new matchups. Lets breakdown how the voting went!
#2 The Karate Kid(1984) vs. #7 Fearless
Wow. I don’t know how I expected that one to go, but it wasn’t the way it did. The matchup article that Jaredd Wilson wrote broke down the strengths of each movie. I thought that The Karate Kid would have put up a better fight, but Jet Li’s movie ran right over it. Fearless earned three times more votes than the crane-kicking Daniel-san could.
Winner: #7 Fearless
#3 Ip Man vs. #11 Ip Man 2
The voting results created a fun matchup here between the original and its own sequel. Ezequiel Caballero went in depth on that matchup here. I was nervous though. What would happen if Ip Man had to fight himself? Would it tear a hole in the fabric of space/time? Would it create a singularity that would suck the whole planet in? Well, thankfully no. It did, however, give us some interesting results. I knew that Ip Man would get some votes for sure, but I had no idea that it would totally shut out Ip Man 2 for a flawless victory!
Winner: #3 Ip Man
#12 Seven Samurai vs. #13 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(1990)
This was probably one of the strangest matchups that came out of the last round of voting. Denise Vasel went in depth about it here. On one side we had a bonafide, film-making classic in Seven Samurai that has been aped and “remade” in various ways for decades. On the other hand, we have the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with their pizza-eating, cowabunga-saying, Shredder-fighting ways. I really didn’t know what to expect from the voting, but Akira Kurosawa‘s epic film came out on top by a margin of almost 2:1!
Winner: #12 Seven Samurai
#1 Enter The Dragon vs. #9 John Wick
The last matchup we have to cover is another “old vs. new” faceoff. Rob Domaschuk covered the details here. I knew that Enter The Dragon would be a strong performer, but I didn’t know what to expect from the voters with John Wick as it is an extraordinarily popular movie amongst martial artists and introduced a very different type of action. Well, it was virtually a shutout with Bruce Lee‘s epic winning by an 8:1 margin!
Winner: #1 Enter The Dragon
Now we will be moving on to the Final Four round with the matchups to determine the top two movies according to the Martial Journal readers!
