Looking At Two Very Different Movies

When I decided to take this matchup, I honestly thought it would be kind of easy. However, it has proven to be much more complex than I had anticipated. I really hadn’t thought too much about these movies until I sat down to start writing about Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master and Keanu Reeve’s John Wick(full movie reviews at the links). Let’s get into what makes these movies deserving of the rankings that you, the readers, have given them.

Drunken Master

Starting with Jackie Chan’s classic movie, we have many of the elements you typically find in an older Hong Kong production. As you might expect, the choreography is very similar to what you could find from various Golden Harvest and Shaw Bros. movies from that era. The martial arts action, of which there is quite a bit, has that metronome quality in that it almost has a “beat” to it. Also, there is a lightness in tone with all of the fight scenes, as you might expect with a Jackie movie. There is also a lot of comedy throughout the movie with Jackie being put into awkward situations and punishments as he does get into some trouble from time to time. While the story is decent, there are certain points when it doesn’t quite make sense based on what has come before.

John Wick

Moving on to John Wick, we find a very different movie, in almost every way. Just to start, this is an all-out revenge movie, and you never forget that fact. The action found here is hard, brutal, and unforgiving. However, the kind of action choreography found in this movie changed things in a similar way The Matrix did. The strictly-martial-arts choreography has been seamlessly blended with gunplay. It is also hyper-realistic with bad guys staying down when they take the correct kind of damage and John Wick running out of ammo often. The story, while not complex, is executed quite well as everybody stays true to their characters throughout.

It’s Time To Vote!

Now it is up to you, the reader, to make your voice heard and decide which one will move forward to the next round. I don’t envy the decision. Both movies have a valid claim to being in the top 16. While both movies have their pros and cons, they are both great in their own different ways. I can’t wait to see which one moves forward!

What do you think of these two movies going up against each other? Let me know in the comments section below!
