Martial artists are notorious for disagreeing about things. But one subject that can keep us up late into the night is debating over a martial arts movie. Whether we argue about fight scenes, realism, impact on our culture, or any other number of details, it’s clear that martial art films matter to many of us.
Which is why we’re going to determine which is the greatest martial arts movie of all time.
With your help, of course.
With March Madness around the corner, we decided a crowd-sourced, bracketed approach would give us the ultimate format for determining which movie is the greatest. Here’s how this works.
First, we need your help compiling a list of all the martial arts movies we should consider for this list. You can comment them here, below, or on our Facebook page post.
Next, we’ll take all of the nominations and put them up, poll style, where you’ll help us pick the top 16 movies and seed them.
From there, we’ll offer up individual matchups that Martial Journal writers will score based on criteria such as fight scene choreography, cultural impact, entertainment value, and more.
But the writers aren’t the ones choosing the victors – the readers are. You’ll vote for your favorite of the two and the winner will move on to the next round.
In each round, we’ll be giving you history and backstage information on each of the movies, including the actors, choreographers and more. Not only will this be fun, but we’re committed to giving you information on all of your favorite movies.
So, please, post any and all of your favorites below so we can get started.
You only have until March 11th, 2019, so don’t wait!
And if you really enjoy reading about martial arts movies, you’re in the right place. We have quite a few articles on the subject, including this one on Mile 22.
